Friends

Everyone knows about this show, and I’m sure everyone also knew that this show was going to be on this list. Because of course, how can there ever be a list of comedy shows without Friends in it? And for good reason too! This show has an 8.9/10 IMDb rating and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show is an American television sitcom that ran for 10 seasons and 236 episodes before concluding. I’m pretty sure you all know the summary of the show and all the actors’ names too, but let’s take a look anyways.

While multiple actors come and go throughout the show, the main story is focused on 6 individuals: Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Ross. These six characters are played by Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer respectively. The story follows six adults, who happen to be friends and are living together while experiencing love, friendship, breakups, parenthood, etc.

Since the characters are depicted to be of ages around the early 20s to late 20s, we can see that they are struggling to manage their jobs, achieve their dreams, and are going through a lot just generally. We can also see that the characters are struggling with their love life and families, and this is one thing about the show that most viewers relate with.

This is the reason for the show’s major success. Most millennials connect with this show as it perfectly depicts the awkward 20s phase with your friends and family. And of course, it makes for a good laugh!

Modern Family

This show is also very popular, although, maybe not as much as Friends. Modern Family is an American television family sitcom and mockumentary with an 8.5/10 IMDb rating and 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. This show is 11 seasons and 250 episodes long with an added special.

The ensemble cast of the show consists of Ed O’ Neill, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Rico Rodriguez, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, and Nolan Gould, and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. They play the characters, Jay, Gloria, Phil, Claire Mitchell, Cameron, Manny, Haley, Alex, Luke, and Lily respectively.

The show follows the story of three very different families, however, these families all happen to be related to each other. We see how all three of these families deal with their spouses, kids, and their families in different ways. We also get to see how they learn to get past the differences and be more accepting and understanding of each other. After all, all three of them are structured differently: nuclear, blended, and same-sex families. So, it makes it interesting to see how different each family can be.

How I Met Your Mother

Another good and popular show on the list, How I Met Your Mother, is an American sitcom that is 9 seasons and 208 episodes long. This show got an 8.3/10 rating on IMDb and 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. The main cast consists of great actors including Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders, and Jason Segel.

These actors played the characters, Ted Mosby, Barney Stinson, Lily Aldrin, Robin Scherbatsky, and Marshall Erikson respectively. The show is basically following Ted (in the future), who is telling his children the story of how he met their mother. So, we are basically looking into Ted’s past and seeing his relationship with his friends and also looking into his previous relationships.

We are also looking at their personal and professional struggles as the story moves along. Of course, the show is filled with touching moments and hilarious situations. There is also the mystery of the mother’s identity that keeps the viewers hanging on to every word!

The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory is another show on the list of popular and loved comedy shows. It is an American sitcom, which is 12 seasons long with 279 episodes in total. The show centers on five characters, Leonard, Sheldon, Penny, Raj, and Howard. Later on in the series, more characters become a part of the main cast too, including Amy, Bernadette, and Stuart. These characters are played by actors, Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg, Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, and Kevin Sussman.

The story follows the four socially awkward friends as their lives take a turn when they meet Penny, who lives in an apartment across from Sheldon and Leonard’s shared apartment. While Leonard and Sheldon are geniuses when it comes to academics and boasts very high IQ levels, they are completely clueless in terms of love and, some might even say, friendship.

Unsurprisingly, they become friends with two more shy and awkward people before they become friends with the outgoing and beautiful Penny. It is funny to watch to see the things that these socially awkward group of friends gets up to.

The Office (US version)

The Office is an American sitcom and mockumentary with a rating of 9/10 on IMDb and 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. This show is also quite popular in its category along with Friends. There was a total of 9 seasons and 201 episodes of the show. It was based on the BBC British series with the same name, although this American version was more of a hit with the audience.

The main cast consisted of actors, Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, B. J. Novak, Angela Kinsey, Brian Baumgartner, Leslie David Baker, and more.

With plenty of characters constantly coming and going, and even recurring, it might seem hard to keep up but it actually isn’t. If anything, having plenty of characters just makes it more humorous since everyone is so different and it makes everything more interesting to follow. The story is as simple as following the misadventures of the employees at one of the branches of the Dunder Miffin Paper Company and the pranks they pull on each other along with terrible jokes.
